Salida Live Music Venues

By Sue Bjorkman

Steamplant Theater

Originally Salida’s first electric company in the 1800s, this historic building is now energized with entertainment. Compelling local, regional and national bands bring a wide variety of cultural experiences to this year-round venue. It’s also home of the Walden Chamber Music Society concert series from October through June. The multi-use complex also includes a conference and special events center and art gallery. The outdoor riverside plaza is one of the most scenic spots in town. 220 W. Sackett Ave. http://salidasteamplant.com/

Soulcraft Brewing Co

Salida’s live music scene grew exponentially when this brewery opened in Nov. 2016. They don’t just craft beer, they brew excitement with free concerts. Their entertainment calendar is jammed with concerts, comedy, jam sessions, trivia nights and celebrations. This spacious indoor venue allows room to dance, get close to the bands or enjoy the outdoor beer garden. Having 16 different beers on tap keeps everyone happy, too. Whether you’re into Reggae, funky electronic music, rock, folk rock or bluegrass, it plays here at some point. HWY 50 between G and H Streets. https://soulcraftbeer.com/

Riverside Park

It’s hard to imagine a more laid-back beautiful venue. Shaded by 100-year old trees and serenaded by the Arkansas River, this green space at the edge of downtown is a magnet for music. The Salida Rotary Club band shell is the focal point during the myriad of summer festivals and it’s also the place to enjoy the Thursday night Summer Concert Series. Talented and innovative musicians provide the soundtrack for good times in this bring-your-blanket, naturally rocking venue. The elevated stage overlooks tiered cement and grass seating with plenty of room to dance. Sackett Avenue. http://salidarec.com/riverside-park/

Boathouse Cantina

Join the music lovers club – known as FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) at the Boathouse. Arguably the best location in town, this riverside restaurant and venue has live music every Friday during happy hour. The concerts are held in the “second room,” where café tables give way to comfy couches and bar games and ample space to rock. Music is not just free but accompanied by food and drink specials. 228 N. F Street. http://boathousesalida.com/

Benson’s Tavern

This local favorite, moose-head-on-the-wall type of bar is sometimes referred to as Salida’s version of ‘Cheers.’ They’ve recently upped their live music game by dramatically expanding the outdoor patio and beer garden. The stage occupies the west end, with mountain views providing the natural backdrop for musicians of all genres. Drinks are served out of the Airstream trailer parked near the stage. Seating is informal, the dancing is energetic and the party vibe is contagious. 128 North F Street. http://bensonstavern.com/

Victoria Tavern

Crank it up – it’s always party time at “the Vic.” One of the finest examples of architecture in Salida’s historic district, this venue has a two-story corner entrance with Victorian charm to spare. Its bygone charms are abundant inside too with a long “Wild-West’ type bar and wood floors. But this 1898 structure rocks in a very modern, hip way now. Notorious for late night live music, the Vic regularly books talented, wild, raucous bands. When its festival time across the street in Riverside Park, count on this venue to kick things off and keep the party going afterwards, too. 143 N. F Street. https://victoriatavern.com/

Wood’s High Mountain Distillery

The brick-and-steel tasting room offers comfy church pews and couches for sipping locally-made artisan ‘Colorado-style’ whiskey and gin and listening to live music, too. Whether it’s a bluegrass trio on a Sunday or an alternative punk rock band on Friday or a solo guitarist on Saturday, this venue is a cool place to be. Located in an atmospheric historic building in the center of downtown, this place is all about spirits – distilling them and lifting them. 144 First St. http://woodsdistillery.com/

Vino Salida Wine Cellars

On Friday evenings, wander to the winery for live music. Local favorite David Tipton has a standing gig every week from 5-7 pm coinciding with happy hour. Tipton plays a “Chapman Stick,” an electric musical instrument that conveys many musical sounds and styles. The tasting room is like a welcoming parlor where winemakers and visitors mingle while savoring more than 20 varieties of award-winning fruits of the Colorado vine. In the summer, live music livens up the outdoor patio. 10495 CR 120, Poncha Springs https://www.vinosalida.com/
