Parking Lot Cook-Off and Tailgate Party
Monarch Mountain’s closing party weekend is coming up, and the time to make plans is now. The weekend is so full of Winter-to-Spring activities at Monarch, we’re not quite sure where to start! Just be sure to make plans to be here for all the Rocky Mountain fun – you won’t want to miss a minute. If you’re the type to mashup the seasons, Chaffee County is the perfect place to do it, too. You can ski Monarch all morning, and drive into Salida in the afternoon to get your mountain bike broken in on some of the best trails in Colorado. Most of them are already open and rideable!
Kayaks on Snow
Imagine gliding in a kayak down a solid white course, negotiating bumps, banks berms and bangs along the way, in front of a few hundred avid spectators. Only this kayak route is miles from the usual water – or at least the liquid kind. This route takes place entirely on a snow-packed mountain course! One of Monarch’s signature Spring events, the Kayaks on Snow race is as fun to watch as it is to race. Similar to Skier Cross, contestants race down a specially-created chute on Monarch Mountain in a no-holds-barred quest to reach the bottom first – hopefully in one piece. The whole mountain becomes party central, with vendors, food and fun on hand all day. Come with the family to watch – and bring your kayak if you’re keen to give the course a try!
Enjoy Your Whole Weekend!
There are tons of options for families and groups to take full advantage of the whole weekend – before and after skiing or boarding. Groups can meet up at the popular Elevation Beer Company in nearby Poncha Springs, and carpool the last few minutes from there to Monarch for the day’s activities. It’s a great place to grab some carbs on the way up, and relax with some excellent Apres-Ski fare after a day on the slopes.
If you’re traveling up to Monarch and back on US-285, the Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista offers a similar option. Just about 45 minutes from Monarch, Eddyline is the perfect place to stop for a breather before the long ride home.
Either way, make sure to make plans to get up here and experience how Monarch helps make Chaffee County so typically Colorado.
