Love for skiing and winter adventures is in your genes, so get ready to pass this on to your kids.
Introducing little ones to a lifetime of snowy smiles on the slopes is an important and thrilling rite-of-passage. Here are 10 reasons why families love Monarch Mountain:
1. GO TO SCHOOL:
Teach your own kids to ski? Um, sure… That can be fun. OR, let the certified (i.e. ultra-patient) instructors do their thing. Monarch’s Ski Instructors are members of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), assuring top-notch lessons. Enroll your little “Never-Ever” in the ‘First Timers,’ class or be a part of your child’s first ski experience in the “Mini & Me,” class (ages 3-6 with a parent). Older kids can make great strides in the Junior Mountain or Teen lessons.
2. GO FOR THE GREEN:
With a yearly average of 350 inches of all-natural snow, Monarch is known for unspoiled powder runs. Many of these are fantastic family-friendly Green runs, making it the perfect place to learn and improve. True beginners can use the Caterpillar Lift, a giant conveyor belt that operates like a moving sidewalk up the bunny hill. Then take Snowflake from there. The Tumbelina Lift leads to Rookie while the Pioneer Lift goes all the way to the top. From there enjoy both beginner and intermediate runs, like the long-and-wide Sleepy Hollow run.
3. GO TUBING:
Sliding, spinning, giggling – tubing at the Monarch Tubing Park brings out the child in everyone. It’s a no-experience required adventurous thrill for all ages. It’s great for groups that include non-skiers, too. Each tubing session lasts an hour or additional hours may be purchased. Advanced tickets are available online or same-day tickets are available on-site.
4. GO TOGETHER:
Some resorts are sooo huge that you spend all day trying to find each other. But here, it’s truly that Goldilocks thing – not too big, not too small, but just right! Everyone can ride the lifts together, and then choose level-appropriate runs from there. All runs funnel down to one base and one lodge area, making the meet-up seamless. It makes a surprising difference in your peace of mind knowing the plan is as simple as “See you the lodge at noon!” Whew.
5. GO PLAY INSIDE:
Sometimes time off the snow is just what your little ones need. For half or full days, The Children’s Center’s staff will keep your tots (ages 3-6) happily occupied reading a book, catching a little quiet time, creating crafts or just playing the day away. With snacks! Kids can be here just for childcare or combine it with group or private lessons.
6. GO FOR LESS:
Family memories are priceless, but vacations can get pretty pricey. That’s where Monarch can help. Monarch is notoriously less expensive than most Colorado ski areas. Kids 6 and under ski free here and there’s big discounts for others too. Single-day walk-up tickets are as much as $30 less than other resorts. Get advanced tickets online and save as much as 40%.
7. GO LIKE A LOCAL:
Save like a local with a Monarch Season Pass. If you’re here for several days, it pays off. Season pass perks include unlimited skiing (no blackout dates!) at Monarch and free or discounted days at several partner resorts in Colorado. There’s also discounted buddy tickets and savings on childcare, lessons and rentals. Enjoy food deals at Monarch’s restaurants, as well as many in Salida and Buena Vista, too. Plus, get discounts at Monarch shops and rock that butterfly logo gear everywhere you go.
8. GO ON A PICNIC:
Monarch offers an indoor picnic area where you can brown-bag-it in warmth and comfort. On bluebird sunny days, take that picnic out onto the outdoor deck. Or savor appetizing options at the fam-friendly Gunbarrel Cafeteria. The heaping Nachos are legendary at the Sidewinder Saloon, too. Top it all off with a hot chocolate at Monarch’s Java Stop. Make sure you get that whip cream on top. Yum.
9. GO SKIING WITH CHARACTERS:
On Christmas Eve, the great jolly Santa Claus himself takes time before making his gift-delivering rounds to ski at Monarch. And on Easter, the Easter Bunny hops on the chair lift to join your kids on the slopes. Fun! Of course, you may encounter other characters here, too…
10. GO FOR BEST FESTS:
Every day on skis is a special occasion but sometimes things get even more festive. Monarch is famous for signature events such as the magical Monarch Torchlight Parade on New Year’s Eve and the unforgettable Kayaks on Snow shenanigans. Check Monarch’s schedule for other special events throughout the season.
